What Is the Best Ratio Between Knowledge Building and Action?

Essentially, this is asking the question:

How much time should you spend studying, reading, and learning vs. doing, building, and experimenting?

The answer depends on the stage you're currently at.

When you're younger or just starting out, the bias should lean toward action. Action creates inertia, and you want inertia working for you—not against you. Once you get the ball rolling, you’ll begin to identify and discover your highest leverage actions.

At that point, you’ll want to start shifting the ratio—spending more time identifying the key levers that generate the biggest outcomes. That’s when reflection, analysis, and learning become more valuable.

Ultimately, it comes down to understanding where you currently are, then finding the right balance that:

  • Works

  • Works for you

  • Generates your desired outcomes
